Letter: Courage faces down church group's charity event August 20, 2014 Langley Advance Dear Editor, Thank goodness Patricia Tallman has the courage to stand up and object to the horror [Hog feast offends vegan, Aug. 12 Letters, Langley Advance]. How can a Christian church group, supposedly governed by a commandment “Thou shalt not kill,” engage in killing [Senses go hog wild at Langley fundraiser, Aug. 7, Langley Advance]? Some say, “Oh, that only applies to humans.” Really? Let’s look at the larger context, biblically. First, Adam and Eve were given the abundance of The Garden as food. They were instructed to be good stewards of the animals, to name them, as we do with our children and beloved pets. But then disaster struck, and the abundance of the fields was drowned. So after The Flood, human beings were told they could eat animals – because there was nothing else. OK, so we can be forgiven for eating meat when required for survival, as is the way of traditional Inuit groups. However, let’s get real: was threat of starvation the motivation for the Langley church picnic? In fact, how many of the church membership struggle with obesity? Worse, how many struggle with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and cancer? Let’s face facts: eating meat should only be a last resort for humans. Killing healthy animals to eat, when we would be healthier eating plant foods, hurts everyone in every possible way, spiritually and physically. Deborah Pageau, Gibsons |
