Fantasy in every scoop:
When lies become truth
There’s a fantasy epic
in every scoop. That would be the message in this vintage Deans
Foods ad based on this elaborate illustration that references many iconic
narratives — the Wizard of Oz, Hansel and Gretel, and Noah’s Ark, to name a few.
We could chuckle at this kind of food propaganda from yesteryear, but the fact
is we still buy into it today (and often without even thinking about it).
-
So when we pick a
carton of milk up off the shelf, we think “the innocence of our youth”
rather than the image of a distressed mother cow on a dairy farm who is
frantically bellowing for her newborn that was just taken away from her.
This kind of advertising reflects our culture’s collective denial over
animal suffering. We replace unpleasant and negative images with positive
and happy depictions of animals. And over time the lies becomes “truths.”
