Hidden Abuses Caught at Tyson Chicken Farm

July 10, 2015 Alicia Graef, Care 2

An undercover investigation just released by Mercy for Animals (MFA) has exposed some serious problems going on behind the scenes at a supplier for Tyson Foods, the largest meat producer in the world.

The investigation was conducted at McGinnis Farms, a contract farm in Delaware that raises chickens for meat. The disturbing footage released doesn’t just show the violent handling chickens endure from the time they’re tiny little chicks to the time they’re killed, but also the serious health issues they face as a result of the way broiler chickens are raised.

Workers are seen callously killing birds, carelessly throwing chicks out of transport crates onto the ground, leaving sick and injured birds to die and denying others food, water and veterinary care.  The survivors were then subjected to more violence when they were put back on transport crates and sent to slaughter.

According to MFA, thousands of birds died from injuries and unsanitary living conditions during the investigation – 52,000 from injuries and illness at this one farm over the span of 42 days.

“Tyson Foods is literally torturing chickens to death,” said MFA’s president, Nathan Runkle. “[The chickens] are crammed into filthy, windowless sheds, thrown, kicked, and brutalized by careless workers, and bred to grow so fast they suffer from painful leg deformities and heart attacks. This is sickening animal abuse no company with morals should support. Tyson Foods has not only the power, but also the ethical responsibility to end the worst forms of cruelty to animals in its supply chain.”

Even though there have already been multiple investigations  showing cruelty at suppliers for Tyson, the company still says animal well-being is a top priority, that it takes allegations of abuse seriously and that it has policies in place to prevent cruelty.

Following an investigation in 2013 that uncovered cruelty at a pork supplier, the Animal Legal Defense Fund filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission over its deceptive claim that it was a leader in animal welfare.

Tyson has since changed the wording on its website and now cites the fact that it has a third-party auditing system and an “advisory panel of animal well-being experts.” The company states: “Taking proper care of animals―treating them responsibly and with respect―is the right thing to do.”

Unfortunately, there’s still clearly a huge and very misleading divide between what it says it does and what it is actually doing to animals that would almost be funny if it wasn’t so horrific. MFA is now calling on Tyson to step up and make some meaningful changes to end the worst abuses it found that include implementing meaningful welfare standards for all of its farms and slaughterhouses, not breeding for rapid growth and providing a cleaner more natural environment among other measures.

Still, one way to let a company know you don’t like what they’re doing is to simply stop buying their products, or in this case, leave chicken off of our plates. For more info on the investigation, visit TysonTorturesAnimals.com.
