Hunters and their beagles pursue Central Pennsylvania rabbits in annual hunt by the Harrisburg Beagle Club

February 16, 2013 Markus Schneck PennLive blog with video - mschneck@pennlive.com

More than 50 teams of rabbit hunters and their beagles are pursuing the swift-footed rodents in tangles, swamps and fields across Central Pennsylvania today, all part of one of the annual team rabbit hunt of the Harrisburg Beagle Club.

With 53 teams in the field, it's one of the largest organized rabbit hunts in the area in recent years, according to Jim Kiser, president of the club.

The hunters will get together this afternoon to weigh the rabbits they've bagged and split prize money of $800 to the team that brings in the four heaviest rabbits, $400 to the team with the second heaviest total of four rabbits and $250 for the single overall heaviest rabbit.

Watch the video closely and try to find the point at which a rabbit darts through the underbrush right in front of the camera.

Comment: We contacted Markus Shneck at Penn Live as well as Jim Kiser, President of the Harrisburg Beagle Club. We pointed out that this activity is cruel with many people categorizing it as murder, and that perhaps next year the hunters could become the hunted. Mr Schneck responded by saying: Actually, I believe murder is illegal, while hunting and hunters are not only legal but also pay the bills for most of the wildlife conservation and wildlife management in the state. That warranted another response from us. Mr. Kiser did not respond. Additional remarks were posted to the article via Facebook.
