July 8, 2013 Farmweekly.com.au

A NEW complaint regarding the treatment of Australian cattle in Vietnam is being investigated by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

DAFF confirmed a complaint was received on June 28 from a member of the public alleging breaches of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) in Vietnam relating to Australian cattle. "Evidence has been provided to DAFF and an investigation has commenced," a statement from the Department said.

"The department has informed Vietnam’s officials and contacted the exporter implicated in the complaint. "Depending on the complexity of the issue, an assessment or investigation may take some time to identify, and gather information from the parties involved, and to examine and consider it before the investigation is finalised."

No information about the nature of the complaint or the exporters involved was yet available.
