Rabbit Advocacy Animal Matters

Meat rabbits -  New South Wales

December 2012 Freedom for Farmed Rabbits is an advocacy group located in Melbourne, Australia. One of their campaigns is to bring awareness to the plight of factory farmed rabbits. This is part of a response just received from a restaurant that serves farmed rabbit meat:

"NSW Law states that Farmed Rabbits are not permitted to be reared as a “Free Range” product as they would be regarded as pest animals. Therefore Farmed Rabbits can only be reared in rabbit-proof enclosures by law.

... Rabbits are confined to cages suspended above the floor. The predominate reason for caging the rabbits (as opposed to allowing them to range-rear in the enclosure) is to prevent them from consuming their own manure and general hygiene reasons. I hope this information sourced for you via Vic Meats is helpful. Ciao"

Note: In Canada, rabbit consumption is less than 25g per capita annually. Rabbit farming is not recognized as a "traditional" or "mainstream" livestock production system. Its production is considered a "marginal" or alternative form of agriculture. Québec produces approximately 50% of rabbit in the country, followed by Ontario with approximately 37%.
